How to avoid rental scams in Cork
Updated 20 October 2026 · 2 min read
Almost every rental scam follows the same script. Learn to spot it.
Warning signs
- A price too good for the area (compare with the prices by area).
- The owner is "abroad" and will post the keys after you pay.
- They ask for money before a viewing or pressure you: "ten other people want it".
- Odd payment methods: Western Union, crypto, gift cards, an account abroad.
- They ask for a copy of your passport right away, or refuse a video call.
How to check
- View it or do a live video call, asking to see something specific on the spot.
- Open the Eircode on Google Maps and compare the front of the house with the photos.
- Only pay after seeing the room, by bank transfer and with a receipt.
If you've been scammed
Contact your bank straight away, report it to the Gardaí (the Irish police) with screenshots and, if the listing was on RoomSearch, use "Report a problem with this listing".
